Job Summary
- The Head of Accounts is responsible for overseeing the Group’s financial accounting and reporting processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of financial information.
- The role provides leadership to the accounting team, strengthens internal controls, and supports strategic decision-making through high-quality financial insights.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting Oversight:
- Supervise the preparation and presentation of periodic financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual)
- Ensure financial reports are auditable, accurate, complete, and in line with IFRS and regulatory requirements.
- Provide financial analysis and insights to support management decision-making.
- Maintain ownership of QuickBooks ensuring completeness and accuracy QuickBooks. Identify errors, initiate corrections, and implement controls to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain and enforce proper accounting procedures across the team.
Month-End Close Coordination:
- Oversee and coordinate month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ensure timely completion of all closing activities, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Monitor adherence to reporting timelines and resolve bottlenecks.
Bank and GL Accounts Reconciliation Oversight:
- Ensure all bank and SFP accounts are analysed and reconciled monthly and all reconciling differences resolved before the next one.
- Review reconciliation reports and investigate discrepancies.
- Ensure proper documentation and audit trail for all reconciliations.
Trade Payables Management:
- Accountable for the accounts payable processes, ensuring timely and accurate recording of liabilities.
- Ensure accuracy of Vendors ageing analysis
- Monitor vendor payments and ensure compliance with agreed terms.
Fixed Assets & Right-of-Use (ROU) Assets:
- Ensure an updated Assets Register, ensuring proper capitalization, depreciation, and disposal accounting.
- Oversee accounting for Right-of-Use (ROU) assets in line with applicable lease accounting standards (e.g., IFRS)
- Ensure periodic verification and reconciliation of asset records.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations, company policies, and audit requirements.
- Serve as Lead on internal and external audit processes ensuring timely closure.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, supervise, and mentor the accounting team.
- Allocate responsibilities and monitor team performance.
- Identify training needs and build capacity within the department.
KPI
- Timely and accurate month-end close (within 5 working days).
- Final draft of audited accounts are ready latest June of the succeeding year
- Team cohesion and development.
- Zero tax penalties from late / erroneous filing and payment
Target:
- KPIs will be tracked monthly
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Professional qualification (ICAN or ACCA) is mandatory.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in accounting, with at least 4 years leading the financial accounting team
- Proven experience in a retail, supermarket, or FMCG environment with high transaction volumes.
- Proven experience in handling a Big 4 audit
- Leadership and team management
- Excellent knowledge of IFRS, Nigerian tax regulations, and internal control systems.
- Proficiency in ERP/accounting software (QuickBooks).
- Advanced Excel and analytical skills
