The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Purpose

  • The Head of Strategy will be responsible for leading the development, communication, and execution of AMCE’s long-term strategic plan, ensuring alignment with its mission, vision, and financial objectives.
  • He/ She will also drive sustainable growth, competitive advantage, and operational excellence through rigorous market analysis, strategic initiative management, and performance monitoring.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Strategic Formulation & Planning:

  • Develop and refine AMCE’s 3–5-year strategic plan, defining strategic pillars, enterprise-wide goals, and prioritized initiatives.
  • Establish a clear strategic narrative that articulates the hospital’s competitive positioning, value proposition, and long-term vision.
  • Facilitate executive-level strategy workshops to build consensus on organizational priorities and resource allocation.
  • Benchmark AMCE’s performance against regional and international peers to identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Present the strategic plan to the Executive Management and Board for review, challenge, and formal approval.

Strategic Execution & Performance Management:

  • Translate the strategic plan into a structured portfolio of actionable initiatives with clearly defined owners, milestones, budgets, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Establish and lead a Strategic Initiative Portfolio Office to govern execution, track progress, and report on portfolio health.
  • Design and implement a robust strategic governance framework, including stage-gate reviews, escalation protocols, and decision rights.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews with initiative owners to ensure accountability, identify risks, and drive corrective actions.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive quarterly and annual strategy performance reports to the CEO, Executive Team, and Board.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate cross-functional dependencies and execution bottlenecks that impede strategic progress.

Strategic Innovation & Continuous Improvement:

  • Establish and maintain a strategic innovation pipeline, systematically capturing, evaluating, and incubating high-potential ideas from across the organization.
  • Lead post-implementation reviews of major strategic initiatives to capture learnings and inform future planning cycles.
  • Champion a culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement within the strategy function.
  • Develop and maintain a repository of strategic frameworks, tools, and best practices to enhance the quality of strategic planning across the organization.

International Accreditation & Quality Alignment:

  • Ensure AMCE’s strategic plan fully incorporates the requirements and timelines for international accreditations (e.g., JCI).
  • Align strategic goals with clinical quality, patient safety, and clinical effectiveness objectives.
  • Leverage quality and safety data to inform strategic priorities and investment decisions.
  • Integrate evidence-based medicine and clinical excellence principles into the strategic planning process.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Sustainability:

  • Embed CSR and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into AMCE’s long-term strategic plan.
  • Develop and oversee the strategic framework for community outreach, public health initiatives, and social impact programs.
  • Identify and manage strategic risks related to environmental sustainability, reputational stewardship, and regulatory expectations.
  • Report on CSR and sustainability performance to the Board and key external stakeholders as part of the broader strategy reporting cycle.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Administration (MHA), Economics, or a related field.
  • Additional certifications in Strategic Management, Corporate Governance, or Data Analytics are highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in strategic planning, corporate development, or management consulting; with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Head of Strategy, Senior Strategy Manager) within a large, complex organization, preferably in the healthcare or hospital sector.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience in leading the end-to-end strategic planning cycle for a multi-divisional organization.
  • Mastery of advanced strategic frameworks (e.g., SWOT, PESTLE, Porter’s Five Forces, Scenario Planning).
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex market data into a clear, compelling long-term vision and actionable strategic plan.
  • Proficiency in interpreting dashboards and performance metrics (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) to track strategic KPIs and communicate portfolio health to executive audiences.
  • Expertise in developing performance scorecards and dashboards to monitor strategic initiative health and overall plan progress.
  • Ability to design and implement a robust strategic governance framework, defining clear roles, responsibilities, and decision-rights.
  • Experience in managing the strategic planning lifecycle from annual refresh to multi-year roadmap development.
  • Exceptional executive-level communication and presentation skills, capable of distilling complex strategies for the Board, C-suite, and staff.
  • Deep understanding of the macroeconomic, regulatory, and competitive dynamics shaping the African healthcare sector.
  • Experience in developing market entry and growth strategies for international or cross-border contexts, specifically in Africa.
  • Cultural fluency and the ability to adapt strategic approaches to different regional contexts within Africa.
