Development Exchange Centre (DEC) is a Non-Governmental Organisation that is non-partisan, non-profit, and established in 1987. It is Incorporated by Trust with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)- (IT/Cert: 10826). The organization has an overarching mandate of providing socio-economic development services to women, groups, communities, and NGOs[1]. DEC’s Head Office is in Bauchi State, and it is currently operational in all Northern States of Nigeria including FCT, Enugu, and Cross Rivers States, with a staff strength of 868 permanent employees. DEC’s socio-economic enhancement programs cut across several sectors that touch the basic fabric of its target beneficiaries and include education, health, economic/livelihoods, water/environment, good governance & peace building, and micro-finance.

Position Summary

  • DEC seeks a proactive and results driven Programme Officer Environment to support the design and implementation of community based environmental sustainability and WASH initiatives.
  • The role involves working closely with communities, schools, and stakeholders to promote climate resilience and sustainable environmental practices.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Mobilize communities on environmental sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives
  • Establish Environmental Committees in schools and communities
  • Implement tree planting, waste management, and waste to wealth initiatives
  • Facilitate WASH infrastructure support and conduct Village Level Operation and Maintenance training
  • Promote sanitation campaigns and clean cooking energy solutions
  • Conduct baseline assessments, monitoring visits, and technical reporting
  • Support early warning systems and climate resilience mechanisms

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Health, or related field
  • 3 to 5 years relevant experience in environmental or WASH programming
  • Strong experience in community mobilization
  • Excellent facilitation, monitoring, and reporting skills
  • Willingness to travel to rural communities
